Tribal Chairperson’s Statement Regarding Reservation Litigation

Tribal Chairperson Regina Gasco-Bentley has released a statement regarding the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa’s reservation litigation.

On Monday, February 28, 2022 the Supreme Court of the United States denied review of our case in Federal Court in which we sought affirmation of the reservation boundaries in the 1855 Treaty of Detroit. In legalese, the U.S. Supreme court ordered that “The petition for a writ of certiorari is denied.” We sought review of the May 28, 2021 ruling of the Federal Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit in which the Court held that the 1855 Treaty did not establish a jurisdictional reservation.

We are having an issue with Quest Labs and you may have received statements from Quest from labs that you had done at our clinic. THESE STATEMENTS ARE A MISTAKE BY QUEST!  These statements were supposed to be directed to LTBB for payment.  Quest has assured us that all patient accounts have been put on hold and no one will be sent to collections due to these lab charges.

If you receive a bill from Quest, please notify PRC at (231) 242-1600.

We are working with Quest to get this resolved and apologize for the inconvenience and stress this has caused.

March/Zinzibaakwad Giizis, that Sugar Moon.
This months moon reminds us of that that gift from the Creator that helps us balance blood and heals us. During this time we are encouraged to balance our lives and nurture our Spirits as we balance our physical beings. This is the first of the medicines harvested in the new year and thus begins a new year of harvesting and preparing for what is to come. This moon also reminds us that when that sap is running for maple sugar/syrup harvest it is celebrated as the Anishnaabe New Year.

During this time of deep sleep/hibernation our dreams are enhanced and teachings filter through from the Spirit world. We look forward to that next moon as we know that the harvest for the new year is coming beginning with Ziissbaakode that medicine we need to help us during our times of dreaming and remembering those visions that filter through to us. Those old ones remind us also that there are new beginnings all the time. During this time of deep sleep for Mkwa there is always one heavy foggy morning that gives us that sign that for Mkwa, Mukoonz has arrived.
