The Repatriation, Archives and Records department for the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians is committed in the collection and preservation of historical records, artifacts, documents, art, books, photos, maps and other relevant materials that are important for LTBB’s current and future generations. The Archives and Records component of the department focuses on preserving materials that tell the long and rich history of the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians in the Great Lakes. These materials are utilized in various projects, such as; museum exhibits, educational presentations, curriculum development, assisting other LTBB governmental departments, research and writing projects, assisting tribal citizens, repatriations and various historical collaborations with local, state and federal entities.
The department works with the LTBB Odawa NAGPRA designee in seeking the return of Anishnaabek human remains. This important task is accomplished through the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), a federal law, and by means of collaborating with private land owners. In addition to the repatriation of human remains, funerary objects are pursued as well, for the purpose of reburial. The department also helps maintains several Odawa cemeteries in Emmet County and actively seeks the locations of other Anishnaabek burial locations in northern Michigan.
Outreach
It is our goal to provide meaningful and accurate information regarding the history of the Odawa/Anishnaabek and repatriation issues to the widest range of audiences possible. Such efforts have included presentations at universities, schools, historical groups, museums, various conferences, trainings, state parks and federal parks. Partnerships
The department has had great collaborations and partnerships on exhibits and other historical projects. Partners include: the Michigan Historical Center, Harbor Springs History Museum, Little Traverse Historical Museum, Emmet County, Mackinac State Historic Parks, Mackinac Historic Village, Harbor Springs Public Schools and the National Park Service.
