2010 Current Projects

The GIS department continues its primary goal by providing technical assistance for those departments who routinely use GIS and GPS technology as part of their everyday operation. In addition, the GIS Department maintains cooperative relations with Emmet, Charlevoix and Cheboygan counties through data sharing agreements and joint/cooperative projects.

Some project highlights for 2009 included 1836 Ceded Territory corner definitions in the Great Lakes. Research from GIS staff included treaty language and data from sources such as the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, United States Geologic Survey, Chippewa Ottawa Resource Authority and others. Tribal commercial and recreational fisherman rely on this type of data interpretation to exercise treaty rights. The Inland Lakes Bathymetry project continues with the addition of a combination sonar/GPS/mapping unit acquired by GIS through a grant from the BIA. GIS will soon have extremely accurate lake depth maps available to tribal citizens. To date, Wycamp and O’Neal lakes (Emmet County) have been mapped. French Farm, Larks, Paradise and Pickerel Lakes (Emmet County) are scheduled for mapping spring/summer 2010. For SCUBA hobbyists, GIS has compiled a database of all shipwreck locations within the Straits of Mackinaw.

GIS is involved with many additional functions within LTBB such as participating with the Former Victories Site Task Force, Renewable Energies Workgroup and other initiatives involving economic and strategic planning.

As always, if you would like assistance with any mapping or other specific project, or have questions about additional GIS projects please email or give me a call 231.242.1597.
